As the saying goes – more or less – diamond (rigs) are a driller’s best friend. At Hagstrom, we have taken this phrase quite literally, investing in three new Boart Longyear LF160T diamond drill rigs in the last 12 months alone.
This forms part of our Company’s strategy to assure a quality and up-to-spec fleet, especially pertinent given the rate of technological advancements being achieved by OEMs nowadays.
With safety an ever-present concern, heavy machinery operators, drillers, drill superiors and mine personnel have a shared desire: to implement process, equipment and technologies that reduce the likelihood of harm to those working out in the field.
LF160T’s are a prime example of how considered engineering can serve to rectify once-hazardous methods of working.
For instance, LF160T rigs come equipped with a hands-free rod handling system (known as the Freedom LoaderTM), meaning that offsiders need not manually handle or load rods. This ensures a safe distance from the drill table can be maintained at all times and eliminates the risk of back injury from lifting heavy rods.
Other safety inclusions on each of the LF160T rigs include:
- Improved walkways and platforms
- Fire suppression systems
- FOPS canopies
- Hardware upgrades for secondary retention
- Anchoring and burst protection for hosing
- Advanced mast locking systems
In addition to the standard features of the LF160T Rigs, Hagstrom has requested the installation of audible alarms, to alert workers to potential hazards or faults during equipment operation.
Additionally, container locks ensure works are on standby before access is enabled to potential ‘risk areas’ of the equipment.
While safety is key, enhanced performance is also a consideration Hagstrom has made in the customisation of these rigs, to ensure their suitability for Tier 1 operators.
Notably, we have opted for a larger 10″ capacity foot clamp and breaker assembly, an upgraded air/water circuit, auto electrical modifications and an additional FMC pump ASM on all three of the LF160T rigs in our possession.
Hagstrom has specifically trained and assigned teams to operate this equipment, providing extra peace of mind in the competency of the personnel on site to work in a way that is equal parts efficient and safe.
