Barangaroo Ferry Hub Geotechnical Drilling Project

Hagstrom Drilling was engaged by Aurecon to complete a geotechnical site investigation for the planned Barangaroo Ferry Hub in Sydney Harbour.

The Barrangaroo precinct was historically used for shipping and stevedoring however the NSW Government is now transforming the space into a public, residential and commercial precinct over the next decade.

Sea Lift 6 was utilised in combination with a UDR 100 drilling rig and a skid mounted CPT unit.

Mobilisation was completed out of a local yard and included adhering to a specific tidal timetable to enable safe towage of the barge under the Anzac bridge enroute to the Barangaroo site.

The scope of work completed comprised seven bore holes and five CPTs through a geology of surface sand and mud and then down through sandstone.

Appropriate waste management during the drilling process was a key requirement with all cuttings recycled through mud tanks on board and then removed from the barge each day for disposal.

The ability of the crews to be vigilant and precise when relocating the jack up was key to the success of this project, given the high level of marine activity in and around the site.

This highlights our ability to maintain effective and efficient drilling services at all times, irrespective of the challenges or attributes of the site.
